Scanner failing

Looks my scanner's lamp is fading after a mere 23,000 pictures. Time to go shopping. Oh well, maybe this time I have the good sense of buying a Linux compatible one instead of a Canon. Canon appears to be opposed to giving out any information to developers who might write drivers for their products. Haven't seen a single Canon device yet that would deign to act as a USB drive when connected to Linux let alone communicate properly. Blah.
Edit: Linux support appears to be entirely arbitrary. Some Canon scanners are well supported. You need to check this list before you go shopping.
